Description

Here is a rare ORIGINAL "Welcome Aboard" commissioning brochure for the U.S.S. MISSISSIPPI (CGN-40), a nuclear guided missile cruiser commissioned on 5 August 1978 at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. She was built by the Newport News (VA) Shipbuilding Co. to provide anti-aircraft and anti-submarine protection to an aircraft carrier task group. She saw considerable service in many theaters with many varied missions over several years. She was the fourth ship to carry the USS Mississippi name. The first was a sidewheel steamer during the Mexican-American War; the second was a battleship (BB-23) 1908-1914, and the third was another battleship (BB-41/EAG-128) 1917-1956. CGN-40 was decommissioned on 28 July 1997. Many of her crew throughout the years are scattered all over the United States. RARE COLLECTIBLE!
This brochure is original, is from 1978 and was the brochure used at commissioning in 1978. It contains a history of all the USS Mississippi ships, a biographical sketch of it's then commander--Captain Peter M. Hekman, her very first commander, specifications for the ship, photographs, a mission statement, and, on the back cover, the crest for CGN-40. The brochure is eight pages, measures 5 1/4" x 8", and is in NEAR MINT CONDITION.
