Late 18thC French Sterling Silver Paris Large Buckle
Fine solid sterling silver buckle made in Paris, France circa 1800. It has been skillfully decorated with intricate hand chiseled flowers around the frame of the buckle. The heavy silverwork is of the highest standard, decorated in high relief Solid Silver 950/1000 (First title of Silver – purer than Sterling Silver). A couple of metal prongs are attached to the secured bar in the middle of the frame…just a rare piece! It is fully hallmarked ‘Cock with 1 on the right- (Paris)’, Man’s Head: Warranty mark, Paris 1798-1809, the digits ‘8’ and ‘5’ aside left and right of the head identify Paris, ‘Woman Head 1’ and the silversmith’s mark ‘R ribbon G’ inside the lozenge. It measures 4 3/8” high by 3 1/8” wide and its total weight is 2.85oz or 81 grams.
