    Description

Presented is a great set of 8 French mother-of-pearl handled knives. These
knives date to around 1809-1819. The knives have beautiful mother-of-pearl
handles, with silver end caps and silver shield-shaped cartouches which have
never been monogrammed. Five of the knives have silver blades as well, while the
remaining three have carbon steel blades. The knives have sheepsfoot type
blades, likely intended as fruit knives.
This set is in great condition. The mother-of-pearl handles are in good
shape, with no chips. The blades are securely attached and in good shape. There
are no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Five of the knives are stamped on the blade with French hallmarks: a tax
mark, the silver guarantee mark of a rooster in an octagonal punch for 800
purity silver as used between 1809-1819, the small article mark of a boar's head
also for 800 purity silver, and a maker's mark of JD. The three other knives,
with carbon steel blades, are marked on the blade with "Ane Mon Gavat" and "Rue
St. Honore 138," presumably the name and address of the maker of the blades.
The knives vary a little in length, between 7 1/2 and 7 5/8 inches.
