Walpurgis Night, also known as Walpurgisnacht in German, is a holiday which occurs on April 30th in different parts of Europe. It is a holiday that is named after Saint Walpurga and is a day that dates back to ancient pagan fertility rites. It is mainly celebrated in Germany, Sweden, and Finland.
The festival comes from Pagan traditions that celebrated the arrival of spring with large bonfires at night. Walburga -- an 8th century nun living in Germany -- became a saint on May 1, and therefore became mixed-up in the festival. Meanwhile, still in Germany, during this same two days the witches apparently gather on Brocken Mountain to do their own celebration in anticipation of Spring's arrival.
